Can condo association spend on gift card for president without a vote?

At our annual meeting our board of directors gave our out going president a gift card and card signed from his friends in the condo association. Most of the people in the condo were not even asked if they wanted to sign the card. We were lead to believe that these people bught this on their own. But we found out condo association money was used. Is this leagal without the whole association voting on this? Can the board spend our money like this?

If the amount spent is within reason the board certainly has the right to purchase a card. If they limited the signatures to only selected few I'd say their ethics need to be readjusted but again it is not illegal.

What do you mean $250 + money. How much money???

$270. I just think the fact that only the board and their friends were asked to sign the card made it a personal gift. They also led the rest of the people at the meeting to think it was their own money spent.

I have seen all manner of questionable giving and self dealing occur within the framework of budgeting, and its all OK if it is approved by the board. Some boards even approve extensive travel budgets for themselves to attend out of state events, or travel to their units from out of state for meetings, including spouses, all paid for by the HOA.

members. If it has been approved in the annual budgets or in some slush fund for spending, its not illegal. Owners should ask about any questionable line items in the budget.

I don't have a problem with the board using asso. money. It's the fact that it was not presented to the ex-pres. from all of the residents.

It is illegal! The position is a volunteer position and under no circumstances should association money be given to any board member as a gift!
