Can our Florida co-op self-insure against wind damage?

We are a co-op association in Florida. Our association on is financial in good shape. Our problem we have is the high cost of Wind Damage Insurance.   My question is can we self- insure our co-op within the limits of state condo and co-op statutes?

I live in 12 unit condo and we carry no wind or flood coverage and it really bothers me ,there is no fl law or statue that say that a condo with 12 units and under need not carry wind coverage if condo wishes.

The issue is whether the owners can afford to pay for the damage caused by wind or flood. The costs can be rather substantial in addition to finding alternative places to live while the repairs are taking place. Something to also consider is that insurance company's engineering services can determine whether or not your roof has been built to building code and whether or not it could sustain high winds. Damage to the roof due to high winds will most likely include water damage from the water coming in from the damaged roof. They would also have recommendations to minimize damage that could occur as a result of wind and flood. Seems to me in a state like Florida, your chances of getting wind and flood damage is pretty high.

The wind insurance is required by Fla law and applies to every condominium in the State:
