Can association control my condo deck space?

Question:

My HOA says I cannot "store" a door mat or plants on my condo deck because it is considered "common" area. Huh?I I share a staircase with one unit but no common area. Many homeowners are baffled as to why
door mats, plants or patio furniture would be considered storage items. In our opinion, they serve a function and are decorations. Lastly, they say we cannot have RING (front door protection) attached to our Units. I am disturbed and as a single senior feel they are not allowing me to protect myself.   Any thoughts or suggestions would be so appreciated!  California
