Can I be an effective HOA President as a "snowbird"?

Question:

How effective can you really be as a Board president if you are a snowbird? I would have at least 3 full time resident Board members with me - and a pretty good management company. Should a President be a local resource so they can be onsite if there is an emergency or quick response required? Struggling with making the decision since Im being asked to consider it. I live 1400 miles away.
