My neighbor whose apartment is below mine has been doing a major renovation for several months. The dust in my apartment makes the air unbreathable for us. I have been staying in hotels without complaining as I have asthma and allergies and my breathing was becoming difficult. We purchased an air quality meter which measures the particulates in the air and when the construction starts each day the numbers exceed 500ppm which is the highest the meter measures. My partner has been coughing as well and started coughing up blood and even my dog started coughing and the vet put him on antibiotics.
Then the Coronavirus came. We cannot know if our coughs are due to coronavirus or the dust. We have no fevers so we suspect it is the dust. We contacted our neighbor and pleaded for him stop hold off on the construction for the sake of our health. I am at high risk of death should I get the virus because of my asthma, and am forced to live in hotels for fear of being compromised by the dust. The mayor and governor of New York have ordered all non essential businesses to close down. Meanwhile my neighbor has ceased communicating with me and at least 5 or 6 construction workers continue to come each day and they are audibly coughing and continue to create dust. They are hardly doing essential work and are violating the cease work orders in place and they potentially bring with them the virus as they touch our front door handrails and other surfaces. I have filed a complaint with the Department of Health but they will not be able to come by for some time due to the crisis. I have alerted the president of the board and the property manager but they do not respond either. What can I do to stop the danger this construction poses during this global pandemic? Should I call the police? New York
