Can condo board run with a smaller number of directors

Question:

We are in Michigan. We are a site condo (single family homes). Our current association board consists of three members. Every election for the past five years or so, we have only three or four members run for election. It has been said that two of our three members that are currently Board members, are not going to run this year. What happens if there are only one or two run for election? What should happen with the Board if only one or two people are on it? How will things run properly? Looking for some feedback on this. Thanks
