Why do condo board candidates need lawyer?

Question:

Our condo is 1,094 units. The previous board resigned to avoid a recall. The Association uses an electronic voting software BPBallot and also voting in person voting at the election meeting. There is group of 4 candidates to the Board and they had hired a lawyer and are requesting donations to pay him. Why candidates need to hire a lawyer? Is this a common practice?
