How to successfully run for condo board

Question:

Our Association has meetings 4 times a year. 3 members are up for re-election and have said they will run. Two of these members do not show up at board meetings. I question a level of commitment if you can't show up at 4 meetings. What suggestions do you have to run successfully for the board. The maintenance man campaigns for the persons that are his "friends"
