What are limitations of condo president?

Question:

Our bylaws state in part that the president of the association has "duites vested in the office of the president of a non-profit corporation". There was a dispute recently that the president had accepted the resignation of one member of the board of directors but asked another resigning board member to remain as a director and treasurer until the next following annual meeting, which was within the following two months. This created a huge discussion at the annual meeting, with some stating that the president had no such power to do either, that such could only be done by the membership at an annual meeting. Bylaws contain no wording addressing this situation just the "duties" wording. Was the president correct?
