Fire alarm costs are setting a blaze to our budget!

Question:

This question is submitted by David K. out of Lynnwood, WA

We have a 76 unit condo that was made in 1989. A year ago, our fire alarm panel broke and was replaced. Now, the fire chief is requiring we bring our entire system up to code. We have quotes of $500,000 to $1,000,000 to do all of the work that he is requiring.

My question is, is this legal?

The owners in the building are not rich and many are on fixed incomes.

We have reached out to quite a few fire alarm companies and they refused to work with us because they think the city of Lynnwood is too hard to work with and have had too many issues with the fire chief.

Thoughts?
