HOA regular dues and special assessments are percentage based

Question:

This question is submitted by Shaya M. out of California

We are 6 condo owners. Each owner owns 1/6 of the common area, but HOA regular dues and special assessments are percentage-based. On our property, 2 larger units are on the right side and 4 smaller units are on the left side of the yard.

I do not understand why should I pay 3 times more than my neighbor if I own the same size of the common area as my neighbors. I have been charged based on the size of my condo, but isn't HOA about the common area ownership?
