How are condo fees typically assessed?

How are condo fees normally assessed? Our association is based on square footage of the unit. My unit has the most square footage because it is a two story unit. Because of this my unit requires the least amount of maintenance because of the footprint but I pay the maximum fees because of the square footage. Just wondering if all associations assess in this manner.  Frankenmuth Michigan
