My vote is proportional to the size of my place. Is this right?

I just moved into an older condo community with about 170 units of various sizes. I just went to my first annual meeting - where I found out that the weight of my vote is proportional to the size of my place. That seems crazy and archaic. When I inquired about it at the meeting - - concerned that my vote would not carry the same weight as other members - I was told that it was this way in the bylaws  - that this was "the way it is" and that it would be a difficult thing to change. Has anyone else seen this before?
