HOA neglects to pay premium and master insurance gets cancelled

Question:

Our HOA in Connecticut neglected to pay the premium on the master policy, and the policy is now cancelled. We have the worst HOA of anyone I've ever spoken with! We are now being told that the insurance company has the right to assess each unit owner for what their share would be for the premium, in order to get the policy reinstated. Can this really happen? Can we sue the board for not paying the premium since there are THOUSANDS of dollars paid each month in common charges? I live in a 200+ units association. Any help will be greatly appreciated
