Can condo association prevent criminal from running for board

Question:

We have been notified that one of the candidates for election to our Condo Board of Directors was convicted of larceny from a neighbors unit while she was on the Board of her previous condominium several years ago. How should we handle this situation? Should we ask her to withdraw from election? If she doesn't withdraw, should we announce what we know to the membership? Can Condo Boards require criminal checks of owners if they want to run for office? What are the rules on this topic in New York State.
